Used container grades: CW, WWT and IICL
Used containers differ in condition. So that buyers know what they will get, the industry uses a few standard grades:
- CW (Cargo Worthy) - the container is fit to carry cargo. It usually has a valid CSC plate and meets TIR, UIC and CSC requirements, so it can be used for both storage and shipping.
- WWT (Wind & Water Tight) - the container keeps out wind and water: the doors and roof let in neither water nor light. Without a valid CSC plate it is not meant for shipping cargo, but it is an excellent, cheaper choice for storage.
- IICL - the strictest standard for used containers, set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. These containers have been repaired to strict rules and are in very good condition.
Many sellers also use their own grades such as A, B and C. These usually describe appearance rather than structural condition, and they can mean different things at different companies. So always ask whether a container is CW or WWT and whether it has a valid CSC plate. Read more in used container grades explained.
Cheap shipping containers: how to choose the best value
The cheapest container is not always the best value. If you only need storage, a WWT container is perfectly fine and saves money. If you may ship or resell the container one day, choose a CW container with a valid CSC plate - it holds its value longer.
Before buying, check:
- doors and seals - the doors should open and close without much force, and the seals should be intact;
- roof and walls - scratches and small dents are normal, holes are not;
- floor - it should be dry and firm;
- rust - surface rust is normal on a used container, but the steel must not be rusted through;
- documents - ask about the CSC plate and the container number (BIC code).

How to look after a used container
A shipping container is tough, but simple care helps it last:
- place it on a level, firm base so the doors open easily and water does not collect under the floor;
- check the roof once a year and clear leaves and snow;
- clean and paint spots of surface rust so they do not spread;
- grease the door hinges and locking bars;
- if you store items that dislike damp, add ventilation - it reduces condensation.
