"How much does a shipping container cost?" is the question we hear most. There is no single answer, because the price depends on several things. In this article we explain what makes up the price of a shipping container, where you can save and how to get an exact quote quickly.
The main factors behind the price
1. Size
The bigger the container, the more steel it contains and the more it costs to build and transport. But the price does not rise in line with the volume: a 40ft container has twice the space of a 20ft one, yet it usually does not cost twice as much. So per cubic metre, a larger container is often better value.
2. Condition: new, CW or WWT
A new (one-trip) container costs the most, but it looks near-perfect, has a valid CSC plate and the longest service life. A used CW (cargo worthy) container is cheaper and can still ship cargo. A used WWT (wind & water tight) container is the cheapest - it keeps out wind and water but is meant for storage. Read about the grades in used container grades explained.
3. Height: standard or high cube
A high cube container is about 30 cm taller and usually costs a little more than a standard one.
4. Container type
A reefer costs considerably more than a dry container because of its insulation and refrigeration unit. Special containers - Open Top, Flat Rack, Open Side - are priced differently from standard ones too.
5. Quantity
When you buy several containers at once, the price can be discussed individually, and delivery per container is often cheaper.
6. Delivery location and method
Delivery cost depends on the distance, the container size and how easy the site is to reach. 10-20ft containers usually travel on a small crane truck, while 40-45ft containers need a large crane truck or a side loader.
7. The market
Container prices move with demand in global shipping. A price you saw six months ago may be different today.
How to save when buying a container
- Match the grade to the job. If you only need storage, a WWT container is perfectly adequate.
- Compare sizes. One 40ft container is often better value than two 20ft ones, if you have the space.
- Prepare the site. If the truck can reach the spot easily, delivery is faster and simpler.
- Consider renting. If you need a container for only a few months, shipping container rental may be cheaper.
Extra costs to think about
- a base - concrete blocks, paving or compacted gravel (see how to prepare the ground for a container);
- extra locks, ventilation or shelving;
- conversion work if the container will become a workshop, office or home.
